Hedges & Pruning
Keeping on top of hedges and trees makes a big difference to the look and feel of your property. Regular care helps plants stay healthy, improves safety, and keeps everything neat and under control. From small garden hedges through to large established trees, we offer a full range of pruning and trimming services across North Canterbury.
Hedges
A well-kept hedge provides shelter, privacy, and structure to your garden. Left too long, they quickly become overgrown and lose their shape. We trim and maintain hedges of all sizes, from small garden borders to tall shelterbelts, and leave your property tidy once the work is complete.
Tree Trimming, Thinning, Pruning, and Deadwood Removal
Trees grow stronger and healthier when they are cared for regularly. Thinning the branches lets in more light and air, while pruning encourages fresh growth. Removing dead or damaged wood helps prevent disease and keeps your trees safe during high winds or storms.
Crown Reduction, Shaping, and Pruning
Sometimes a tree grows too large for the space it is in, or begins to block light and views. Crown reduction reduces height and spread while keeping the natural shape of the tree. Shaping and pruning improves structure, balances growth, and helps the tree remain a strong feature in your garden without becoming a problem.
Canopy Lifting
When branches hang too low, they can block access ways, shade lawns, or crowd other plants. Canopy lifting removes the lower branches of a tree to open up the space beneath. This improves light, creates clearance for vehicles or footpaths, and can make a garden feel bigger and brighter.
Fruit Tree Pruning
Fruit trees need regular pruning to produce their best crop. We prune to improve structure, remove crossing or weak branches, and encourage healthy fruiting growth. Done at the right time of year and with the right cuts, pruning helps ensure your trees continue to provide fruit for many seasons to come.
Large Grounds and Commercial Areas
Looking after large sites such as schools, lifestyle blocks, or commercial properties takes careful planning and the right gear. We provide regular tree and hedge maintenance for organisations that need to balance safety, appearance, and practical use of their grounds.
For schools in particular, health and safety is a key concern. We carry out tree work during holiday breaks so it does not interrupt students or staff, and we make sure every tree is safe, well-maintained, and left tidy. Branches are secured, dangerous wood is removed, and any larger timber can be cut into rings for firewood if required.
FAQ
When is the best time to have my tree pruned?
Winter is considered the most ideal time, to reduce stress on the tree.
How much height can you take off the tree?
Maximum 1/3 of the canopy, any more may cause the tree to decline.
How often should I have my hedges trimmed?
At least twice a year, to maintain a good leaf cover and avoid branches growing too thick to trim.
How quickly can work be carried out?
Typically, within 2 weeks of quote acceptance.
Can I keep the woodchip?
Yes, we can tip it at an agreed spot at your property or remove if required.
“Nick and Sharon have done work at Papanui High School for the past 2 years, they come into the school during one of the school holiday breaks to do tree maintenance within the school grounds.
We have a large amount of trees and in keeping with Health and Safety we need to ensure the trees are safe and all branches are secure.
They work professionally, very organised, great communication and have huge knowledge of each and every tree. On completion of a day's work the site is cleaned and left spotless without any damage to surrounding vegetation, large trunks of wood are cut into rings for firewood.
A totally professional job and I would thoroughly recommend them.”
